Pittsburgh Filmmakers' three venues (Harris Theater , Regent Square Theater, and Melwood Screening Room) offer a range of alternative films that aren't at the multiplex. In addition, there are film series and events. Check the films page for up-to-date information about films and showtimes for each theater.
The Regent Square Theater features classic films every Sunday night. Each month is organized by era, genre, director, actor, or other (informally) connected theme. Example: “Dish Night – Films From the Depression.” Almost always shown in 35mm prints – often newly restored, or rare archival prints. Showtime: Sundays at 8:00 pm; Admission: $9 or $7 for students and seniors.
Since September 1998 this series has been showcasing local and regional short film/video work. In addition, a themed contest is held each year. Held the second Tuesday of every month (except August), receptions are always at 7:00 and films are always at 8:00. That month's filmmakers discuss their projects in person; tickets are $5.00 – proceeds benefit presenting artists. Co-sponsored by Spak Brothers Pizza, Mellinger Beer Distributor, and 92.1 WPTS. THREE RIVERS FILM FESTIVAL
The annual film festival is a program of Pittsburgh Filmmakers. It remains the oldest and largest annual film festival in the region. This exciting celebration features over 40 films – documentaries, independent American films, foreign films, short films, restored classics, local films.
While the feature-length films have never been juried, there is a competitive shorts program every year with submissions local, national and international artists. Each year space is devoted in the festival for a competitive selection of shorts – a program for artists working in film and video that allows them to creatively take risks, break new ground or challenge the viewer. The categories are experimental, narrative, animation, and documentary. Between 10 and 15 short films from hundreds of submissions are selected. Prizes are awarded for first place, second place and third place.
