Construct your own mosaic in glass using up-cycled materials like windows and frames. Utilizing glass, rather than ceramic tiles, creates a translucent effect similar to stained glass. Learn the basics of mosaic design, shading, coloring, glass cutting techniques, layout and grouting. Work individually on your own piece through out the week and collaborate with your peers on a larger design that will be displayed at the PCA School.

June 16 - June 20

Director's Workshop 9 AM - 3:30 PM Entering Grades 9 - 12 Sign Up $340 members, $365 non-members

Everyone wants to direct, but what does a director do? Find out by exploring concepts such as visualization, composition and shot choice. Screening and analysis of a variety of films ranging from the silent era to contemporary classics will enable participants to recognize the influence of the director. You’ll learn how to plan and direct scenes, and discover how the crew works together to fulfill the director’s vision.

Sewing Fundamentals 9 AM - 12 PM Entering Grades 9 - 12 Sign Up $165 members, $190 non-members

Become familiar with using a sewing machine and the basics of joining fabric. Review the parts of the machine and learn how to wind a bobbin and thread the needle. Utilize various stitches, learning to adjust type, length and width. Using both the machine and hand sewing techniques, create functional and decorative items for you and your home.

June 23 - June 27

Manipulating Metals with Lindsay Huff 9 AM - 3:30 PM Entering Grades 9 - 12 Sign Up $280 members, $305 non-members

Learn the fundamentals of working with metals in this new jewelry-based intensive. Acquire a wide range of skills by learning forming and construction methods like casting and soldering and learn to add color and textures through embossing and enameling. Experimentation will be emphasized with techniques like raku enameling which can create unexpected metallic lusters and electroforming which transforms organic matter into metals through an almost magical synthesis.

Learn the essential techniques of photography from exposure and composition to processing and printing in a darkroom. Students will explore local neighborhoods in search of excellent photographs as well as work with lights in a studio setting. Bring your own 35mm camera or use one of ours. All materials, including 35mm black-and-white film and photo paper are provided.

June 30 - July 3 (four days)

Android App Fundamentals 9 AM - 3:30 PM Entering Grades 9 - 12 Sign Up $270 members, $295 non-members

You can make an app for that! This camp is an introduction to creating apps in the Android environment. Campers will create their own novel and interesting apps utilizing all the cool features of Android phones, including internet connections and sensors. Students can bring their Android devices (phone or tablet) to camp or borrow one of ours.

Early Painting Techniques with Zachary S. Brown 9 AM - 12 PM Entering Grades 9 - 12 Sign Up $155 members, $180 non-members

Delve into painting techniques that were created in ancient times and explored in Medieval and Renaissance art. Study the alchemy of early mediums like encaustic and egg oil emulsion and come to a better understanding of the composition of modern pigments. While building your technical narrative, investigate contemporary artworks that integrate these archaic practices and utilize early mediums as alternative mediums in your own painting.

July 7 - July 11

Hand-Drawn Animation 9 AM - 3:30 PM Entering Grades 9 - 12 Sign Up $340 members, $365 non-members

Anyone who enjoys drawing will be able to bring their artwork to life in this camp emphasizing traditional cartooning techniques. Class examples from Disney to anime will be examined to reveal the magic of stop-motion. Each student will create their own custom “flip-book” and a variety of short animations.

HIgh Fire Ceramics (week 1 of 2) 12:30 PM - 3:30 PM Entering Grades 9 - 12 Sign Up $310 members, $335 non-members

Utilize our professional ceramics studio and equipment to create functional and sculptural ceramic artworks using both handbuilding and wheelthrowing techniques. Experiment with surface design and textures and use high fire dipping glazes to create enduring stoneware pieces. Tuition includes 25 lbs of clay, glazes, bisque and gas firing.

Due to the drying and firing time needed to complete a ceramic piece, artworks will need to be picked up at a later date. This is a half-day, two week long program.

Learn basic programming skills as you manipulate video and music using Python programming language. End the week by creating a side-scroller video game that you can play at home and share with friends.

Gain experience with glass fusion, metalsmithing and wire wrapping in this in depth jewelry immersion. Join glass together and embed wire and metals to create hand-made findings and wrap found glass with wire; combining two elegant mediums to create mixed media broaches, earrings and pendants.

Designed for High School students with a serious interest in filmmaking, this immersive camp offers hands-on experience working with the latest digital technology. Taught by instructors of Pittsburgh Filmmakers’ School of Film, Photography and Digital Media, it covers essential concepts and technical skills, while students have a blast collaborating to create short digital films. All participants receive a copy of the textbook, Shot By Shot: A Practical Guide to Filmmaking.

In this camp students will learn how to develop new and imaginative Miyazaki-inspired characters and take them into the digital realm using Wacom Digital Illustration tablets and Adobe software.

As birthplace to George Romero’s classic horror films and to special effects make-up master, Tom Savini, Pittsburgh is the perfect city to nurture an interest in monster making. Learn how to develop movie-worthy artwork in this introduction to creature design and mask making. Take a character from concept to completion as you transition from anatomical sketches to maquette building and basic mold making. Use professional materials such as latex and airbrush paint to create a realistic half-mask representing your devised creature.

Acting and Auditioning Workshop with Actors for Autism 9 AM - 12 PM Entering Grades 10 - 12 Sign Up $240 members, $265 non-members

This acting workshop is designed for high school students with autism spectrum disorders. Students will act for the camera through a series of exercises created by PF/PCA’s Youth Media Program and Actors for Autism. They will explore the most valuable and fundamental aspects of acting: listening, responding and learning to behave truthfully under imaginary circumstances. As they become more uninhibited and begin to enliven their acting skills, they will feel more comfortable taking emotional risks, making bold choices – and have fun while doing it.

Digital and traditional photography will be compared and in-camp projects will provide an opportunity to improve aesthetic and technical skills through guided practice and critical analysis. Bring your own camera to class or borrow one of ours.

Drawing 9 AM - 12 PM Entering Grades 9 - 12 Sign Up $150 members, $175 non-members

Gain experience with gesture and contour and learn about proportion and anatomy while drawing from a clothed model. Make marks with materials like charcoal, oil pastel and paint as you hone your observation skills and move beyond sketched studies to create a successful artwork.

Learn how to animate like the pros in this exciting camp. Students will begin the week by designing their very own stop motion puppet, complete with armatures. They will then collaborate to write, storyboard, and film an original stop motion animation using their creations. Please note, students will be using liquid latex in this class.

Experimental Printmaking with Conor McGrann 12:30 PM - 3:30 PM Entering Grades 9 - 12 Sign Up $155 members, $180 non-members

Concentrate on relief and screenprinting processes, learning contemporary and traditional techniques. Play with lines by carving into linoleum block and etching into metals using an intaglio technique utilized by Rembrandt. Create clear, professional prints from each relief using 1,000’s of pounds of industrial strength with our professional printing presses. Create DIY textile artworks; experimenting with screenprinting methods, using stencils and other resistance methods.
