Friges, who is Assistant Professor of Photography at Point Park University, explores the boundaries of digital and analog media in this exhibit – the intersection between image and object, the blending of photography and sculpture.
“I address the medium of photography and its classification as a two-dimensional art form,” she says. The pieces in the show are large-scale gelatin silver prints. She experiments with process in the darkroom, manipulating the paper to construct three-dimensional sculpted works. The shapes are gradated tones of black and white gelatin silver pieces, which become inverse on light-sensitive paper once exposed. Friges then incorporates the gallery lighting to create additional forms on the reflective surface of the photographic paper. The pockets of highlights and shadows that result add to – or contradict – the shapes of images she's already created.
“My artwork engages with nostalgia in an ever-changing HD world,” she says. “I work on blending the two traditions, creating hybrids and commentaries on change.”
Originally from Cleveland, Friges received her BFA from the University of Akron and her MFA from the University of California, Irvine. Her work has been shown in galleries and museums around the country, including LAXART, Los Angeles, CA; The Spencer Museum of Art, Lawrence, KS; The Printed Matter, New York, NY; and Sculpture X, Columbus, OH.
