instructor biosJamie Adams Jamie Adams' portraits have been commissioned and collected all across the country, and from as far away as Vienna, Austria. Notable public commissions include Pennsylvania Governor Robert P. Casey, former University of Pittsburgh Chancellor Wesley Posvar, Carnegie Mellon’s Dr. Edward R. Schatz, the late Cardinal John J. Wright, Pennsylvania House Speaker Matthew Ryan, and many other Speakers and Senate leaders. Jamie was also commissioned by the State to complete four paintings of 18th Century House Speakers, including Benjamin Franklin. Jamie previously taught at Temple University, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, PCA and Carnegie Mellon University. Jamie currently teaches drawing and anatomy at Washington University in St. Louis, MO. He is an Assistant Professor and Director of the Core Program. He has also recently lectured in Brussels, Belgium, on the palettes and color strategies of the European Schools. She was the lead archivist for the Bausch and Lomb Optics Center in Rochester, NY, and a nominee for the International Sculpture Center’s Outstanding Student Achievement in Contemporary Sculpture in 2006. Mauren Antkowski Concentrates mainly in photography, drawing and small sculpture. Ray Appleby is the owner and founder of Technique Architectural Products and creates architectural masterpieces, fueled by a lifelong love of art. He graduated from Carnegie Mellon University with a degree in art and design and concentration in sculpture. His first creations of steel, wood and upholstered furniture were showcased in New York and Pittsburgh galleries. Ray then began receiving requests for other types of projects, including specialty café furniture and custom hand railings. After a few years working as a freelance artist/craftsman he followed his passion for design and metalwork to its ultimate conclusion and started a business devoted to these interests. She began offering writing groups to cancer patients and their families and experienced how storytelling and writing enhanced connection and integration of difficult feelings. Since then, she’s taught writing in libraries, hospitals, community education centers, art galleries, nature centers, schools and shelters. All parts of the writing process are emphasized, from seeking out subjects, to what stops us from writing. The chance to express oneself and feel heard through the empowering act of creativity can be life changing. Vincent Beatty is a decorative artist and muralist working along the East Coast for leading designers and galleries. A competitive Olympic sport fencer and sword historian, he serves as sword master for the Pittsburgh Opera and the Mel Fisher Maritime Museum in Key West, Florida. Jennifer Bechak is a sculptor who has been an adjunct Professor at several colleges and universities throughout PA for the past 7 years. Jennifer studied at the University of Zagreb Academy of Fine Arts, earned her BFA from Edinboro University of PA and MA and MFA from Indiana University of PA. She thoroughly enjoys teaching and interacting with students, and assisting students to be successful in their own endeavors. Jennifer is on the Advisory Board for the on-line based group, Articulate: Pittsburgh Creative Network. She’s also part of Dreaming Ant, an independent dvd shop, and curator for Crazy Mocha, located in Bloomfield. Nancy Bishop is a former production weaver, currently working full time as a graphic artist. She is a member and former president of the Weaver’s Guild of Pittsburgh, a PCA resident guild. In addition, Bishop has worked for five years as a mentor artist for Woodland Hills High School’s Gifted Program. BA, Art History, Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Tina Brewer has developed a national reputation as a creator of story quilts. Ms. Brewer's work has been widely exhibited locally and nationally. She received first place award with one of her story quilts in the Art of the State Exhibition in Harrisburg. Member of Fiber Arts Guild, Associated Artists of Pittsburgh and Women of Vision. Morton Brown, originally from Arkansas, is currently a public artist and an art consultant for the City of Pittsburgh Department of Parks and Recreation. His involvement with public art began while he was in college. He painted murals in private homes, for businesses, churches and on public buildings, and involved with the Smithsonian Institution’s Save Outdoor Sculpture! program. Morton also worked as a mural artist with the City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program before moving to Pittsburgh in 2001. From 2003 to 2007, Morton helped create and administrate the Sprout Public Art Program, a nonprofit organization that utilizes local artists to paint community murals throughout the region. Connie Cantor is a self-taught artist who works intuitively in both traditional and nontraditional media and styles. In teaching, she brings to the classroom the struggles and joys of her own creative journey while creating a safe, supportive place for others to find their own authentic path. Ms. Cantor is a member of Pittsburgh Society of Artists, a PCA resident guild. Fred Carlson has been working as an illustrator since his sophomore year at CMU in 1975. He recently celebrated his 25th year as an independent freelancer. Mr. Carlson's clients have included Yankee Magazine, Sony Music, the National Science Foundation, the New York Times, QED Communications, National Review, and countless other agencies, design firms, and corporate commissions. Since 1984 he has illustrated or designed over 350 album covers. He taught advanced illustration as an adjunct professor at Carnegie Mellon's art department for 13 years and recently served 4 terms as President of the Pittsburgh Society of Illustrators. Mr. Carlson addressed the national illustration conference ICON3 in Philadelphia during the summer of 2003. Judi Charlson is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh with a nursing degree. She studied at Carnegie Mellon University and Chatham College, where she received her BFA. Until recently, she was best known for her award winning bronze sculptures. Three of her larger than life size bronze sculptures are installed in the lobby of The University of Pittsburgh’s Victoria Hall. The sculptures are meant to represent the trilogy of the profession of nursing. Charlson's glass castings represent the human body, blending physical power with emotional weight. Charlson’s work has been featured and has won awards in numerous local, national and international exhibitions. She was a finalist in e-merge 2006, an international exhibit at the Bullseye Glass Gallery in Portland, OR. Because of her work in this exhibition Charlson has been short listed for a scholarship at North Lands Creative Glass in Scotland, which will be awarded this summer. She has completed many public and private commissions. Charlson is an active member of several art organizations. She is a member of Gallery 10 LTD in Washington,DC and is represented in Pittsburgh by Morgan Contemporary Glass Gallery. Lisa Chewning is a multiple prizewinner in national writing contests. She has published over 35 short stories and short short stories in literary magazines and anthologies incluidng Walking the Twilight, Feminist Studies, Beloit Fiction Journal, and Mudville Diaries. MFA, Creative Writing, University of Pittsburgh. Olivia Ciummo received her BFA in film and video production at Point Park College. She has exhibited her short films and videos nationally and internationally, including PDX (Portland Documentary and Experimental Film Festival). She has served as program assistant with EXiS (Experimental Film and Video Fest in Seoul Korea) and has curated experimental media shows featuring media artists from Korea, Japan and the US. Mary Collins has exhibited at PCA, the University of Pittsburgh Hoyt Gallery, Penn Modern, Cleveland Center for Contemporary Arts and Westminster College. BFA, Carnegie Mellon University. AA, Ivy School of Professional Art. Also attended Vermont Studio School. As a student, Ms. Collins has studied with artists Sam Gilliam, Frank Stella and Helen Frankenthaler. Randy Collins has exhibited multi-media work locally and nationally. He has taught photography at the San Francisco Academy of Art. Mr. Collins currently lives and works in Pittsburgh as a photographer. Amber Coppings is a fiber artist who specializes in surface design and fiber manipulation, specifically using Japanese shibori techniques. Recently, Ms. Coppings participated in the International Shibori Symposium 2005 in Tokyo and backpacked her way through the rest of Japan. She has facilitated and taught art in over 40 residencies and workshops with people aged 6-96. BFA, Carlow College, with a Certificate of Art Therapy. Valda Cox is a professional potter who has been teaching at PCA for more than 20 years. Ms. Cox exhibits widely throughout region and country. BA, Syracuse University. Arlene Crissman has been working as custom gold and silver jewelry maker since 1976. Ms. Crissman was awarded the Three Rivers Arts Festival’s Best of Show in 1984 and 1986. Patrick Daugherty is a full-time professional artist from Uniontown and has taught at PCA for more than 20 years. MFA, University of Wisconsin. Melissa Davenport is a self-taught artist who exhibits regionally and nationally. She currently works as the jewelry studio manager at Touchston Center for Crafts. She is a member of the Pittsburgh Metals Society and the Silversmiths of North America Guild. Ann Davis started stringing beads when she was 4 years old, (pyracanthia berries on kitchen string) and she's worked as an artist ever since. Studied art at Oklahoma City College and Oklahoma Science and Arts Foundation, specializing in silversmithing. Went on to wax carving and finally production work. Always a technique junkie, she decided to add glass to her silversmithing skills and took her first lampworking class in '92 opening up a whole new wonder-world of glass. Ann is a frequent contributor to Lapidary Journal and is a past Vice President of Organizational Development for the International Society Of Glass Beadmakers. Adina DeRoy-Stouffer is a Squirrel Hill native and graduate of the University of Pittsburgh. She has continued the family tradition in the jewelry industry, designing and selling jewelry for the past ten years. Ms. DeRoy-Stouffer studied jewelry design in Italy. She sells her jewelry internationally through the Internet. Ron Donoughe works full-time as a painter, and has participated in several group and one-man shows. His paintings are included in many corporate and private collections, as well as exhibited at The Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art. BS, Art Education, Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Darlene Durrwachter Rushing has been flameworking glass for over 7 years. She Studied at Studio of the Coming Museum of Glass. Her work is sold at shops and galleries nationwide. Member of Society of Glass Beadmakers and the Glass Art Society. Tom Estlack was born in York, Pennsylvania, but currently lives and works in Pittsburgh. His current studio activities involve interactive kinetic sculpture, computer generated animation and music. His work has been shown in the United States, Slovenija, the Czech Republic, Poland, Russia and Germany. He has a BFA in Painting and Sculpture From the Columbus College of Art and Design and an MFA in Sculpture from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Georgia Feild is a conceptual two dimensional (2D) professional artist, working in varied mediums to create scientifically based “statements” of our Post Modern culture. Her education and work experience, (in Mechanical Design and Environmental Sciences) help Georgia to base her artwork in a variety of scientific fields. Georgia also conducts volunteer avian species verification studies for the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the U.S. Department of the Interior (USGS), making birds a primary focus in her studies and artwork. Pat Falbo has been teaching metalsmithing for 12 years at the Sweetwater Center for the Arts and her home studio. She is a teacher by profession (English Literature) and loves to share her knowledge of literature, and metalsmithing, with her students. Pat is a member of the Craftsman’s Guild of Pittsburgh. Matt Forrest is a member of Associated Artists of Pittsburgh and Pittsburgh Print Group. Jane Freund is a ceramic artist whose current work focuses on handbuilding — especially pit-fired pinch pots. She is a member of Craftsmen's Guild of Pittsburgh and Associated Artists of Pittsburgh. Judith Gentile is an accomplished watercolorist, who has also worked as a graphic designer. Brian Goff is a professional photographer, specializing in unusual approaches to image-making. He takes most of his inspiration from his playful observations of natural cycles, while exploring vast areas of wilderness. Currently, Brian teaches photography at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. He spent most of 2006, on traveling photographic residencies creating new work in Canada and the Pacific Northwest. Before 2006, Brian was a teaching artist at Manchester Craftsmen’s Guild, in Pittsburgh and prior to MCG, a kindergarten teacher in Portland, Oregon. He has a Masters in Education, from Portland State University. Donna Haas is a professional watercolorist who exhibits regionally and nationally. His work appears in many private collections. Member of Sumi-e Society of America, International Society of Experimental Artists, and the Pittsburgh Watercolor Society. Robin Harsh was the PCA Summer Art Camp Manager in 1998 and 1999. She has been teaching multimedia elementary Art for over 7 years. Certified and taught elementary Art in Pennsylvania and North Carolina. BS, Art Education K-12, Art History minor, Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. Tom Hartle received his MFA in sculpture from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1990. After which he spent three years in Baltimore, MD were he established a studio. In 1993 he moved his studio to New Mexico were he spent the next eight years working and exhibiting in Santa Fe, Albuquerque and surrounding areas. In 2001 Tom and his wife settled in Pittsburgh were they are raising their daughter and remodeling their home. His primary material has been wood, using fallen trees and found materials. The content of his sculpture is based in abstraction, creating anthropomorphic forms that relate and interact within a space as to suggest narratives. The strong overtones in his work reference his own personal respect and connection to nature and the land. The juxtaposition of forms abstracted from trees animals, landscapes with figurative elements make up the vocabulary for the narratives that he creates. Robert Huckestein is a professional award-winning artist, specializing in oil painting, watercolor, pencil, and pen-and-ink drawing of the people and places of Pittsburgh done in a realistic style. He has exhibited and won awards at many regional and national galleries including the Center. His work is included in many private collections and in the permanent collection of the Pennsylvania State Museum. Richard Hurstis a professional photographer represented in the permanent collections of The Corcoran, Smithsonian, Carnegie Museum of Art, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, New York Public Library, and Dallas Museum of Art. Michael Johnsen is a co-founder of the influential Orgone Cinema. He has been a consistent advocate for sincere and truly independent media culture since the late ’80s. He has shown films and performed locally and internationally in backyards and museums. His current work concerns the design of electronic audio devices for live performance. Angela Juliussen received her BFA and Art Education degrees from Alfred University. She is passionate about teaching and has had a variety of art teaching experiences during the past several years. She has taught in the public schools, the Art Connection, and the summer art classes at the Carnegie Museum of Art. She has been teaching school and community art programs through PCA during the past year. In addition to teaching, Angela works as a ceramics artist, concentrating on both functional and nonfunctional pieces. Judith Kajder has a wide range of teaching experience at collages in Allegheny and Westmoreland Counties. She specializes in self-expression and self-discovery through redesign and creative beading. Kajder exhibits and sells her work at galleries, boutiques, and jewelry stores. Med, Counselor Education, Penn State University. Sharon Keech taught weaving at the Duke University Craft Center in Durham, NC from 1980 to 1990 and in the weaving studio at North Carolina State University in the School of Textiles. Former Artist in Residence at the UCLA Design Department in 1991. Currently works as a studio weaver, on loom controlled contemporary tapestry. Her work is represented in public and private collections nationally. Sandy Kephart is a professional fiber artist who exhibits regionally and has won numerous awards. She has taught for over 20 years and brings enthusiasm and a “break the rules” approach to the classroom. She is a member of the East Suburban Artists League, South Arts & the Fiberarts Guild of Pittsburgh. Joann Kielar has been working in Arts education for 20 years. For the past five years she has worked as an Artist-in-Residence at Dilworth Traditional Academy for the Arts and Humanities. She has also worked with various arts organizations throughout the city, including Pittsburgh Center for the Arts and Gateway to the Arts. Her own work consists of puppetry and storytelling as well as multimedia visual arts. Sharon Kengle has worked in stained glass for 25 years, and currently works in clay and other media. She teaches at the Frick Art and Historical Center and Franklin Regional School District, and has taught various programs for CCAC Adult. She is a member of the Craftsman's Guild of Pittsburgh, a PCA resident guild. Paula Garrick Klein is a professional artist who exhibits paintings in oil, acrylic and pastels and original inaglio and monotype prints locally and regionally. She is known for her still life and portrait paintings as well as her etchings and monotypes that have autobiographical references. Paula has taught a variety of painting and drawing classes to both adults and high school students at PCA and through other educational venues. She is a member of Associated Artists of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh Print Group and Pittsburgh Society of Artists. Dorothy Lampl concentrates mainly in custom designed painted furniture, creating the lively, colorful pieces which she has sold and exhibited throughout the Pittsburgh area for close to 20 years. She is a graduate of Chatham College and lives in Squirrel Hill. Duncan MacDiarmid is a professional sculptor specializing in figurative works and portraiture. Deb Meteney has been weaving for over 30 years and has taught at Touchstone Center for Crafts and as an adjunct professor at Seton Hill University. She specializes in warp painted handwoven clothing, and is currently focusing on current methods of interest like woven shibori, and woven differential shrinking/felting. Her clothing has been exhibited locally and shown at Convergence juried fashion shows and published in Handwoven Magazine and the Fiberarts Design Book Series. Nancy Mimless is a professional actor and acting instructor. She graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a BA in Theater Arts. She has worked for several multi-million dollar entertainment companies and game shows. She is also known locally as an acting instructor for Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera Academy, JRP, and Center for the Arts. Nancy has worked with children for over 10 years as a Day Camp Counselor/Drama Counselor for the Jewish Community Center and other camps. She is a member of all three professional acting unions (Aftra,Sag,Equity). Nancy is inspired by young people's lack of inhibitions and their creative and natural responses to artistic expression. She was on PCA staff as an Artist Educator from 2002-4 working in community programs. Gordon Nelson is an independent filmmaker whose films and videos have screened locally, regionally and as far away as New Zealand. He is currently the Senior Instructor at Filmmakers at the Center and holds an Adjunct Assistant Professor position at Pittsburgh Filmmakers. BFA, Carnegie Mellon University. Adriane Pacella owns her own shop and has been making homemade soap, lotions and body butters for 11 years. She has nine years teaching experience. BS, Indiana University of PA. Andrew Pavlick is a regional digital artist and is the founder of the In-Motion Project, which provides workshops, classes, and learning material in the digital arts. His work focuses both on creating static imagery and time based pieces on computers. His work has exhibited at The Butler Institute of American Art where he showed as a regional digital photographer. BFA, Digital Arts, Bowling Green University. Donna Penoyer is a Pittsburgh artist specializing in fine silver jewelry and sculptural whistles, known as ArtWhistles, made from Precious Metal Clay. She is certified through both Rio Grande and the PMC Connection and is a member of the Craftsmen’s Guild of Pittsburgh. She has explored many media, including fabric surface design, polymer clay, found objects, wire work, bead weaving, glass, resin, and enameling, gravitating more and more toward wearable art. Penoyer has a degree in literature and creative writing, as well as extensive training in performance, and has been a professional stiltwalker for several years, entertaining at corporate events and festivals. Walt Peterson has been working with and journaling his dreams for over 10 years. He has studied with Rita Dwyer and Father Joseph Sedley at Saint Paul's Monastery and is a member of the International Association for the Study of Dreams, and he has used his nocturnal excursions to create art. Susan Powers is a professional artist who shows nationally and internationally. Her work in digital prints, handmade paper, drawings, and paintings are represented in many private collections. Powers’ teaching experience includes a position as an art professor at City University of New York and Pratt Institute, teaching color theory, drawing and art history. Dafna Rehavia Hanauer is an art therapist with 13 years of experience working in a variety of psychiatric, educational and private settings in Israel and US. She has an MA in Expressive Art Therapy from Hahnemann University in Philadelphia and is currently working on her Phd at Derby University in the UK. Ms. Rehavia is also an exhibiting artist who has shown in Israel and the US. Her art work is characterized by the use of painting and assemblage to explore personally significant questions and issues. Robert M. Robinson has worked as a painter for more than 20 years. He has exhibited in numerous one-man and group shows at PCA, Mendelson Gallery, Carson Street Gallery, Three Rivers Arts Festival and at the Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art. Mr. Robinson has been represented by Concept Art Gallery for the past seven years. His work is in many private collections, including the Carnegie Museum of Art. Myrna Rosen is an adjunct professor at Carnegie Mellon University. In addition, she has been on the faculty of six International Lettering Arts conferences, and has taught at the Center for the last 25 years. She is a founding member of the Calligraphy Guild of Pittsburgh, and exhibits work nationally and internationally. Her latest major project was the restoration of the marble benefactor tables flanking the exit doorway from the Duquesne University Chapel with more than 200 names lettered with enamel and brush. Brooke Rothshank is an independent artist working from her home studio in Pittsburgh. She has shown her miniature paintings at shows across the country, including New York, Chicago, and Philadelphia. She has been working in miniature for 5 years. Joseph T. Sendek has a wide range of teaching experience at universities and regional art centers. Exhibits nationally. Member of American Ceramics Society. MFA, Arizona State University; MA, University of Northern Colorado; BA, California State University. Daniel Shapiro has a BA in studio art and an MFA in painting. He’s currently working on a new series of paintings and creating new silk screen designs for t-shits, baby clothing and fabric. Daniel’s inspiration comes from cartoons, life experience and American culture (most notably the American West). Kathy Shomo is the owner of “The Bead Lady,” a Pittsburgh-based company that design handcrafted jewelry and conducts creative workshops for women and children. She is also the author of three books on teams and empowerment. Winner of William C. Byham Award for Excellence and Innovation in Training. Teaching Artist at PCA, Sweetwater Center for the Arts and other locations in PA and NY. Don Simpson is a veteran cartoonist and illustrator, best known for creating the comic book series Megaton Man and Border Worlds. Don has taught numerous drawing and art workshops in both traditional and digital media. Don also currently freelances in the commercial art field. Ellen McGrath Smith has taught poetry in academic & community settings for 18 years. Her work has been publsihed in over 30 journals. Her chapbook, The Dog Makes His Rounds and Other Poems, was published in 2002. She received the Pennsylvania Council of the Arts Individual Artist Fellowship in Poetry for 2007. She holds an MFA in poetry from the University of Pittsburgh and a Ph.D. in poetics and literature from Duquesne University. Jennie Kay Snyder has exhibited regionally, nationally and internationally. She has won awards in shows through Southern California and Oregon. Jennie has been represented by galleries in New York, Los Angles, Portland, Pittsburgh and beyond. Her work is included in several private and corporate collections in the United States and Europe. She also paints murals. BFA, Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Tammy Ryan's plays have been commissioned, produced and developed at such theaters as Florida Stage, The Philadelphia Theater Company, Playwrights Theater of New Jersey, Primary Stages 29th Street Rep, Pittsburgh’s City Theater and The Pittsburgh Playhouse. A graduate of Carnegie-Mellon University’s M.F.A. Playwriting Program, she has received the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts Playwriting Fellowship, the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust’s Creative Achievement Award, a Vira I. Heinz Endowment’s Creative Heights Collaborative Residency along with grants from the Pittsburgh Foundation. She has twice won the National Playwriting for Youth Bonderman Award for THE GIFT OF THE PIRATE QUEEN and THE MUSIC LESSON, which received the American Association of Theater in Education’s Distinguished New Play Award. Betsy van den Blink is a 2007 graduate of George Mason University with a BA in Art & Visual Technology. She worked as a photo intern for the Smithsonian National Postal museum, and her images are published on their website, “Arago.” She also worked as an intern for the photo editor of the Star-Gazette newspaper (Elmira, NY), and had several images published. She currently works as the PCA Registrar. Rikki L. T. Walsh is a freelance commission artist who teaches all levels of drawing, painting, sculpture and jewelry to children and adults. Her wildlife paintings, sculptures and illustrations have been published internationally. She has experience teaching at South Arts, CCAC and privately around the tri-state area. Rikki's creations can be seen at our PCA's Shop gallery and www.Rikki.Biz Sharon Wilson-Wilcox exhibits locally in painting and printmaking. Member Pittsburgh Print Group, Pittsburgh Society of Artists, and Fiberarts Guild. BS, Art Education, Northern Illinois University. Master’s work with studio emphasis in printmaking, University of Texas at Austin. Lindsay Woge is a museum educator and artist, dividing her time between Chicago and Pittsburgh, where she has taught at PCA for the past six years. In addition to exhibiting mixed-media works nationally, Lindsay focuses on instructing adults and children in drawing, painting, and mixed-media; developing museum curriculum; and curating exhibits. B.A., Art History/French, University of Pittsburgh. Michael Wurster is a founding member of the Pittsburgh Poetry Exchange. In 1996, he was awarded a Harry Schwalb Excellence in the Arts Award by Pittsburgh Magazine for his contribution to poetry and the community. Cynthia Young studies ceramic engineering at Alfred University and ceramics in Japan, England and at Penland, North Carolina. Exhibits and teaches regionally and nationally. Most recently, Ms. Zimbicki is featured in a solo exhibition at the PCA, entitled Zimbicki Roars. Ms. Zimbicki exhibits nationally and internationally. |
