Secrets of Screen Acting (ages 14-17)

We’ve been watching film and television actors all our lives—- but what makes for a successful screen performance? How does it differ from acting on the stage? In this class, the instructor will utilize video to demonstrate and instruct acting-for-thecamera techniques to young actors. Additionally, students will examine great film performances to discover the secrets of their success. Students will perform on camera and critique their performance in class, enabling them to learn the basics of professional film and television craft. One class will focus on audition technique, to prepare young actors to try out for the many film and television productions that shoot in Pittsburgh every year. Each student will receive a DVD of their work that can be used as an introduction to casting directors. $280 members, $305 non-members

Drawing and Painting Sampler (ages 6-9)

B&W Photography for Teens (ages 14-17)

This black and white photography course is for students who want to learn more about traditional photography using film and manual 35mm cameras. Film types, exposure, lenses, movement, composition and depth of field will be covered, along with processing black and white negatives and printing in the darkroom. Bring your own camera to class, black and white chemistry is provided, but students provide their own film and paper, available for purchase from the instructor. $200 member, $225 non members (fee includes all chemicals)

Experimental Video (ages 14 - 17)

Explore new frontiers in the medium of video by combining unusual traditional techniques with current digital video and sound processes to make your own distinctive video art. Video feedback, optical effects and video installation art will be covered along with personal, non-technical approaches to video production. Finished projects can be burned to a DVD or posted on the internet. Equipment will be provided for use during class time and students may choose to borrow equipment outside of class for an access fee of $25, or use their own equipment. $135 members, $160 non-members

Ceramics Intensive (ages 12-16)

Take your ceramics skills to the next level. Learn more advanced techniques for throwing on the wheel, using stoneware clay and high fire glazes. All pieces will be fired in our high fire gas kiln. $210 members, $235 non-members

Drawing Studio (ages 10–15)

Join in this new professional studio experience for young artists. Learn the basics of drawing and painting through exercises that focus on the still life, portrait, and wildlife subjects. Animation for Kids (ages 5-7)

The activities in this course will nurture the creative spirit of young children by allowing them to experiment with the art form of animation. Focusing on the manner in which younger children exhibit curiosity regarding the moving image, they will be guided through a step-by-step process leading to a final animation project burned onto a DVD. All children will work with paper materials, digital cameras and computers, while being encouraged to let their young minds explore the imaginative possibilities of animation. $80 members. $105 non-members

Pinhole Photography (ages 11-13)

Wheelthrown Ceramics (ages 9-14)

Beginners learn to create pots, bowls, mugs and more in this fun introduction to making pottery on the wheel. Preparing the clay, using clay tools, centering, throwing cylinders and bowls, as well as glazing and decorating techniques covered. Firing processes and clay properties also discussed. Advanced students may complete one piece that will be high fired using our high fire glazes. $140 members, $165 non-members

Hand Drawn Animation (ages 11-13)

Anyone who enjoys drawing will be able to bring their artwork to life in this fun class emphasizing traditional cartooning techniques. Classic examples from Disney to anime will be examined to reveal the magic of stop-motion. Students will begin by creating their own custom “flip-book” followed by a short animated video movie. $105 members, $130 nonmembers

Kid-Vid (ages 8-11)

This fun class will get children started making their own creative movie productions using kid-friendly technology. Students will learn the basics of visual language used in movies, proper use of a camera, sound and editing with Apple computers. Students will work on collaborative short productions during class time and receive a DVD of their projects. All equipment is provided during class time. $105 members, $130 nonmembers

Cartooning (ages 9-14)

Move over Mickey Mouse, and start creating your own cartoon paintings! Topics will include painting a cut out animal, creating a cartoon strip and a class cartoon collage project. We will cultivate interest in creating expressionistic imagery, painting techniques, and yes of course, silly faces. $135 members, $160 non-members

Clay for Two (ages 5-8 w/adult)

Collaborate on projects or work independently side-by-side to create pots, tiles and small sculptures while learning handbuilding methods like pinch, coil and slab construction. Use glazes, underglazes or paints to finish your pieces. Fee is for one child and one adult. $150 members, $175 non-members

Art Around the World (ages 6-9)

Experiment with color and paint what you see in the world around you. Take a trip around the world and use what you see as inspiration for different hands-on projects. Recreate some of the artifacts and art objects you learn about on your journey. $130 members, $155 non-members
