Lithography is a printmaking method for printing on a smooth surface. Overview the lithography process from past to present and produce a single color litho print, and methods to achieving photographic to hand drawn litho. Join the party! A base fee of $60 ($85 nonmembers) includes a full kiln shelf, typically 4 or 5 bisque-fired pieces (an additional $15 per shelf if you need to fire more). We will discuss all aspects of the Raku process. Wear clothing that completely covers your body. Glazes and tongs provided. Students participate in all aspects of the firing. For people who want to experience the process but don’t know how to make their own vessels, you can have fun glazing and take two already made small pieces home with you for $30.

Study the techniques of the masters and make perspective and color theory more tangible in relating realist artists such as Da Vinci and Bougeareau to the live model. The seminar will include in-class demonstrations and time on the loom to start and finish a small project, with special focus on finishing techniques, milling the warp and using elastic fabrics. If you’ve worked in Precious Metal Clay (PMC), or even polymer clay, you’ve probably used store-bought rubber stamps to texture your pieces. Ready for a way to make your own images? Etch copper, use UV- activated photopolymer plates, and learn other low-tech methods to create patterns on PMC, an amazing form of fine silver that’s malleable and worked like clay but fires to pure silver with a kiln or torch. Make a fine silver box bead with unique imagery on each side! All tools and materials provided. $55 materials fee payable to the instructor at the first class.

Working pewter is very different from working gold, silver or copper. It’s considerably quicker and easier, but has it’s own set of tricks to learn. While invisible signals have been criss-crossing the globe for 100 years, most of today’s radio transmission is regulated by government and run by corporations. In this class we will use electromagnetic radiation as an artistic tool. We will focus on methods and resources of radio production; look at examples of radio theater, personal narrative, and sound poetry. Students will create both documentary work and free-form creative projects. They will become familiar with recording technology, the creation of sound effects, and the overall process of preparing work for broadcast. The class will culminate in the transmission of student projects over the Pittsburgh airwaves.

Students are invited in this course to get to know their digital still cameras more intimately. How is your digital still camera different from a film still camera? Becoming familiar with the unique qualities of digital cameras also involves an introduction to Photoshop. This course will introduce the relevant aesthetic and technical processes to get students thinking about what is possible with the new medium. Students will work with digital still cameras, Macintosh computers, Adobe Photoshop and a digital printer. Upon completion of the course, students will receive a minimum of two final digital prints and a CD burned with their portfolio of work from the class.

A hands-on introductory animation class. Students will work on various animation projects (2D, 3D and pixilation), working with Mini-DV camcorders and computer software programs on Mac computers. This course is for individuals with little or no experience editing. Classes will cover aesthetics as well as the basics of using a nonlinear editing program and creating a simple DVD. Examples of various cutting techniques ranging from Hollywood Classics to experimental, independent and documentary films and videos will be screened and discussed.

In this course, we will explore elements of both photojournalism and documentary photography to create our first photo essays. Students will be required to have means of transportation during class time, so that we may travel to and from our shooting locations. We will practice fair and accurate reporting and hone our technical and compositional skills by working in facilitated group field exercises. Additional class time will be spent discussing the issues photojournalists face, studying the work of other photographers, and responding critically to each other’s work. Students will be expected to work outside of class time in order to complete the final project, a photo essay.

This course is designed for Artists who would like to convert their existing portfolio material into the digital realm. Artists enrolled in this class should come prepared with slides, negatives and/or digital files of their work. Working with Photoshop, gain the technical knowledge to fine-tune your original material by adjusting contrast, color balance, image size, color saturation, etc. Learn the basics of file formats, archiving and storage. Output your images to the web or print media. Artist will have the opportunity to work with various scanners and printers including large format printing.
