Have fun working together transforming paint, clay, glitter, glue and more into unique works of art to display or give away. A new activity or theme will be introduced each week. Each child must be accompanied by one adult. Summer of Art(ages 4–6) It’s summertime, so let’s celebrate! Each session, explore the wonder of the season by creating works of art. Make big sun hats and decorate them, draw and paint beachy seascapes, sculpt crazy insects out of clay and more. Come and celebrate the arts with us! Claymaking(ages 6–9) Get your hands muddy! Working with clay has limitless possibilities. Make pots, tiles and small sculptures using a variety of handbuilding methods including pinch, coil and slab construction. A World of Art(ages 6–9) Travel around the world with paint and clay as our guide. Young explorers will experience the art of the world’s many different cultures. Painting, printmaking, sculpture and more Drawing and Cartooning(ages 9–14) Explore the basic methods of drawing and cartooning. Instruction will cover the fundamentals of line, contour, shading and perspective with a special emphasis on learning how to draw the human figure for use in cartoons. June 2 - 6Side by Side(ages 2–3 w/adult) Adult-child teams engage in creative art activities together using paint, paper, markers and clay. Discover the joy of creating art with a special child in your life. Each child must be accompanied by one adult. Summer Sensations(ages 4–7) Celebrate sunshine and get creative while exploring all the sights, sounds and smells of summer. Use a wide variety of materials to create dazzling artwork inspired by sunshine, seashells, flowers and the vibrant world of summer. A Bundle of Beasts (ages 4–7) From a parliament of owls and a pride of lions to bundle of beasts, discover the wonders of the animal kingdom. Look for animals we see every day, paint animals that are extinct and pretend you are an animal that stays awake all night! Various activities in the visual arts, along with stories and creative movement will be incorporated in this week that is sure to bring out the beast in you. June 9 - 13Amazing Alphabet Adventure(ages 4 – 6) Lost in Space [now filled, to join a wait list call 412-361-0455](ages 5 – 7) Join us on this space odyssey as we travel at the speed of light through the Milky Way. Witness the making of stars and moons along the way and use papier-mâché, glitter, paint, clay, and fabric to make an array of astral creations including a sleek miniature spaceship, a friendly alien and a solar system mobile. Young Leonardos(ages 6 –12) Leonardo da Vinci, painter, sculptor, architect, scientist and inventor, was one of the most creative individuals of the Italian Renaissance. Like da Vinci, create architectural models, draw, paint, sculpt and invent while investigating how things work. This unique camp unites the arts and sciences. Comic Books and Zines(ages 9 –14) Learn the basics of making sequential art and personalized one-of-a-kind ‘zines. Create your own personal comic books, artist books and ‘zines. Basic techniques in drawing, painting, pen and ink, collage and bookbinding will be covered. Animation for Kids [now filled, to join a wait list call 412-361-0455](ages 5 –7) The activities in this course will nurture the creative spirit of young children by allowing them to experiment with the art form of animation. Children will be guided through a step by-step process leading to a final animation project burned onto a DVD. All children will work with paper materials, digital cameras and computers, while being encouraged to let their young minds explore the imaginative possibilities of animation.
June 16 - 20Art Adventures Together(ages 2 –3 w/adult ) Making art together is a wonderful way to spend time with a child. With adult guidance, children engage in art activities using paint, paper, markers and clay. Each child must be accompanied by one adult. Octopus Garden(ages 4 –6) What treasures will we find under the sea in your octopus garden? Learn about the many riches that hide in the deep blue sea. Use paint, paper, glitter and glue to create dolphins, sharks, starfish and seahorses, as well as the unique plant life that thrive in our oceans. Dive into your creativity! Art Around the World(ages 5 –7) Take a trip around the world and use what you see as inspiration for different hands-on projects. Paint what you see in the world around you. Recreate some of the artifacts and art objects you learn about on your journey. This Old House(ages 6 – 12) Are you tired of that same old house? Let your imagination run wild as we take pictures of houses and buildings and redesign them into something extraordinary! Start by drawing and painting the plans of your new home, then, bring your creation to life with cardboard, paint, clay and more. Street Photography [now filled, to join a wait list call 412-361-0455](ages 9 – 14) Explore the streets of Shadyside and Squirrel Hill in search of the perfect photograph. Capture the people, buildings, houses and nuances of Pittsburgh on film. Focus on the principles of composition and the processes of developing and printing film. Included in the fee is a camera that can be taken home at the end of camp. All the World's a Stage(ages 9 - 14) During this intensive two-week acting camp, learn about character development, scene study, vocal projection and stage movement while working toward a performance on the last day. Develop acting skills and strengthen self confidence. (Due to the scope and limited time of this camp, attendance each day is very important.) Wheelthrown Ceramics(ages 9 – 14) Learn the techniques and methods used for wheelthrown pottery. Create pots, bowls, mugs and more in this fun introduction to making pottery on the wheel. Preparing the clay, using clay tools, centering, throwing cylinders and bowls, as well as glazing and decorating techniques will be covered. Camp concludes with a Raku firing. Studio Arts Sampler(ages 9 – 14) Sample the arts! Draw and paint outdoors, make unique prints, sculpt people and animals and more. This is a great introduction to the arts and the perfect way to further your skills in a fun, relaxed atmosphere. Secrets of Screen Acting(ages 14 – 17) Learn the tricks of the trade for acting in movies and television. We’ve been watching film and television actors all our lives, but what makes for a successful screen performance? How does it differ from acting on the stage? Learn the basics of professional film and television craft by performing on camera. Participants will also analyze great film performances to learn the secrets of their success. One session will focus on audition technique, to prepare young actors to try out for the many film and television productions that shoot in Pittsburgh every year. Each student will receive a DVD of their work that can be used as an introduction to casting directors. Sound Design(ages 14 – 17) Well-designed audio is as important to a film or video as good composition and lighting. A quality soundtrack consists of a balance of dialogue, music, ambience and specific sound effects. Learn to record, edit and mix audio using a variety of microphones and recording techniques. Explore the work of the Foley Artist by producing sound effects using everyday items to create believable or fantastic audio to enrich and enhance your soundtrack. 5–6 year olds may enroll in both Octopus Garden and Art Around the World with supervision provided during the half hour break between camps. June 23 - 27The Beat Goes On [now filled, to join a wait list call 412-361-0455](ages 4 –6) March to the beat of your own drum in this camp that combines music and art. Draw, paint and make your own musical instrument while exploring the worlds of sight and sound. Combine art projects with song for a joyful interactive experience. Shapes of Matisse(ages 5 –7) Look to one of our great masters for inspiration. Enjoy the colorful, cut-out creations of Henri Matisse. Use your imagination to draw, paint and cut colored paper to make your own beautiful masterpieces. Medieval Adventures(ages 6 –12) Travel back to exciting medieval times and find out what life was like. Hear stories of kings and queens, knights and dragons. Illuminate your own book, make a coat of arms, sculpt a dragon, build a castle and much more. 5–6 year olds may enroll in both The Beat Goes On and The Shapes of Matisse with supervision provided during the half hour break between camps. Then use a variety of techniques that may include fabric painting, silk-screening, tie-dyeing and batik to carry out your designs. Animation Studio [now filled, to join a wait list call 412-361-0455](ages 8 – 12) Learn varied approaches to making animated movies, partly by screening the work of animators, but mostly with hands-on projects using traditional animation techniques aided by Apple computers. Experiment with 2-d animation and pixilation. Collaborate on a final project with an original soundtrack edited in Final Cut Express. Drawing and Painting(ages 9 – 14) Learn the fundamentals of drawing and painting. Line, form, texture, composition, color, value and perspective are covered. Projects include outdoor sketching, landscape, still life and portraiture using watercolors, acrylics, pencils, pastels and charcoal. Everybody's a Director [now filled, to join a wait list call 412-361-0455](ages 14 - 17) Everyone wants to direct, but what does a director do? Find out by examining concepts of visualization, composition and shot choice. Learn how to design, plan and shoot a scene. Screening and analysis of various films will enable participants to recognize the influence of the director. Direct dialogue and non-dialogue scenes and discover how a crew works together to fullfill the director’s vision. June 30 - July 3 (no CAMP July 4)Stars and Stripes(ages 4 – 6) Celebrate our nation’s independence by making your own patriotic works of art. Use paint, paper, glitter, markers and more to dazzle your friends with your patriotic flags, hats and banners. Invite your family for the special grand finale on the last day of camp as you show off your spirit in a parade around PCA. 5–6 year olds may enroll in both Stars and Stripes and Dinosaur Camp with supervision provided during the half hour break between camps. Dinosaur Camp(ages 5 – 7) Take a trip back in time to the land of dinosaurs. Invent your very own dinosaur friends and make them come alive through drawing, painting and sculpting. Picasso Camp [now filled, to join a wait list call 412-361-0455](ages 6 – 12) Learn why Picasso is one of our most beloved artists. Explore the many different styles of Picasso's career: Rose Period, Blue Period, Cubism and more. Draw, paint, and sculpt as you create your own modern masterpieces. Anime and Cartooning(ages 9 – 14) Learn the tricks of the trade in this introduction to anime and cartooning. Learn the fundamentals of line, contour, shading and perspective with a special focus on drawing the human figure in the style of popular cartoons and Japanese animation. Video Fundamentals Extended(ages 14 – 17) This course is for aspiring filmmakers looking for a good place to start making their own original projects in digital video. Storyboarding, cinematography, sound, editing and making a DVD will be covered. Students will make two projects, including a “photo-comic strip” (still images with sound) and a final movie. Completed projects will be screened and discussed in class. Digital video cameras and Apple’s Final Cut software will be provided to use during class-time. Work with colors, shapes, lines and all the tools Picasso used to create his masterpieces. Make wacky portraits, crazy sculptures and more. Wild About Bugs(ages 5 –7) Enter a world of dots and spots, stripes and shapes as you learn about ladybugs, bumble bees, butterflies and many other colorful insect friends. Make your own creepy crawlies with paint, clay, crayon, fabric and more! Andy's Factory [now filled, to join a wait list call 412-361-0455](ages 6 - 12) Join the assembly line in creating some amazing Pop Art masterpieces. Learn about what makes art “pop” and how Andy Warhol used the help of his friends to create amazing artwork from images in popular culture. Earth and Fire [now filled, to join a wait list call 412-361-0455](ages 9 - 14) This camp is an intensive two-week opportunity to develop skills in ceramics. Explore wheelthrowing, handbuilding, sculpture and finishing techniques like sgraffito, resist, underglazing, glazing and painting. Camp concludes with a Raku firing. Nature Photography(ages 9 - 14) The beauty of nature has inspired photographers for years. Using the grounds at the Center and scenic Mellon Park, gain first-hand experience in photographing the natural world. Emphasis will be on the principles of composition and the processes of developing and printing film. Included in the fee is a camera that can be taken home at the end of camp. Everything 3-D!(ages 9 - 14) Throw away that pencil and paper and enter the world of 3-D sculpture. Learn the basics of sculpture in this introductory camp on the art of the third dimension. Experiment with clay, plaster, found objects and more as you explore the possibilities of the world of sculpture. Intro to Digital Photography [now filled, to join a wait list call 412-361-0455](ages 14 - 17) Get acquainted with the unique functions of digital still cameras and Adobe Photoshop software. Improve your aesthetic and technical skills through practice and in-class discussions. Bring your own camera to class or borrow a camera from the media lab during class time. Upon completion of the course, participants will receive a minimum of two final digital prints and a CD of their work from the class. Children may register for two half-day camps. Supervision will be provided during the half hour break between camps. 5–6 year olds may enroll in both Pint-Sized Picassos and Wild About Bugs with supervision provided during the half hour break between camps. july 14 - 18Birds, Bugs and Butterflies [now filled, to join a wait list call 412-361-0455](ages 4 – 6) Get creative while exploring the flower gardens in Mellon Park. Focus on the flowers that provide food and nectar for the winged inhabitants of a garden. Use a wide variety of materials to create dazzling artwork as we paint, print, draw and sculpt in this celebration of flowers and the beautiful creatures they attract. 5 – 6 year olds may enroll in both The Shapes of Matisse and Sail Away with supervision provided during the half hour break between camps. Puppet Theater [now filled, to join a wait list call 412-361-0455](ages 5 – 7) Dream up and design crazy characters and bring them to life as hand, finger, stick, string and shadow puppets. Come up with original stories and put on a puppet show. This camp is an enriching experience, which combines painting, sculpture, collage, storytelling and performance. Monster Mash(ages 6 – 12) Draw, paint and sculpt your way into the wacky world of make-believe monsters! Creatures from myths, legends and contemporary stories will inspire you to make up your own medley of monsters whether furry and friendly or splendidly spooky. Write stories, make books and bring your characters to life with papier-mâché, plaster, googly eyes and more. The Art of Mexico(ages 6 – 12) Head south of the border to learn about the rich culture of our neighbor, Mexico. Create festive artworks inspired by the people and places you visit along the way. Learn about famous Mexican artists like Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera as we paint, draw, sculpt and more. 5–6 year olds may enroll in both Birds, Bugs and Butterflies and Puppet Theater with supervision provided during the half hour break between camps. Eco Art(ages 8 – 14) Learn the importance and fun of preserving and celebrating our unique planet. Focus on how we can make a positive difference for our environment. Create endangered animal clay tiles, an exotic aquarium, wood collages and more. Video Improv-O-Rama(ages 14 – 17) This fun class is designed to let students explore the world of improvisational acting combined with video-making exercises. Working as an ensemble, investigate comical and highly creative approaches to making short videos through a series of movement and voice exercises. The work of comic heroes from Ernie Kovacs to Monty Python will be screened for inspiration, instruction and laughs! Experimental Digital Photography [now filled, to join a wait list call 412-361-0455](ages 14 – 17) Sample a fascinating variety of non-traditional methods to create and present unique, personal photographs. Processes covered include experimental camera and lighting techniques, inventive scanning of unusual materials, working with image degradation, ink manipulation, toning, collage and mixed media. Cameras will be available during class time or students can use their own. july 21 - 25Dr. Seuss & Mother Goose(ages 4 – 6) Have a fun time making rhymes with Dr. Seuss and Mother Goose. We’ll read Mother Goose rhymes and Dr. Seuss stories each day. Create your own rhymes, paintings, drawings and games. With Sam I am, Miss Muffett, Cindy Lou and you, we’ll celebrate the joy of rhymes and art! Piñata Party [now filled, to join a wait list call 412-361-0455](ages 5 – 7) Take a swing in this fun-filled exploration of the culture of Mexico and the history of the piñata. Create your own piñata using papier-mâché and other materials. Build piñatas representing your favorite animals, creatures and people! Stage Right(ages 6 – 9) Delve into the world of theater and develop acting skills while having fun! Work as a group to write a play, design costumes, create sets and finish the week with an informal performance for friends and family. Forts and Secret Hideaways(ages 8 – 12) Hide away in this camp that combines sculpture and architecture. Design your own special fort or secret hideaway and then construct it using cardboard, paper, plaster, paint and more. Drawing and Cartooning(ages 9 – 14) Explore the basic methods of drawing and cartooning. Learn the fundamentals of line, contour, shading and perspective with a special emphasis on learning how to draw the human figure for use in cartoons. Ceramics Intensive [now filled, to join a wait list call 412-361-0455](ages 12 – 16) Take your ceramics skills to the next level in this two-week intensive ceramics camp. Learn more advanced techniques for throwing on the wheel, using stoneware clay and high fire glazes. All pieces will be fired in our high fire gas kiln. Animation Studio(ages 14 – 17) Learn varied approaches to making animated movies, partly by the screening the work of animators, but mostly with hands-on projects using traditional animation techniques aided by Apple computers. Experiment with motion painting and pixilation. Collaborate on a final project with an original soundtrack edited in Final Cut Express. Experimental Video(ages 14 – 17) Explore classic experimental video-making techniques combined with current digital and sound processes to make your own distinctive video art. Learn about all of the fish and plants that call the ocean their home. Listen to the many tales of the seas or tell your own then draw, paint and sculpt your stories for all to see! 5–6 year olds may enroll in both Fish Tales and Treasure Hunt with supervision provided during the half hour break between camps. Treasure Hunt [now filled, to join a wait list call 412-361-0455] (ages 5 – 7) Join the hunt for lost treasures! Create your own gold coins, Egyptian masks, treasure maps and other buried treasures with a variety of materials. End the class with an exciting treasure hunt! Time Travelers(ages 6 –12) Hop in the time machine and examine artwork from throughout history. Explore the cave paintings of Lascaux, France, the large-scale abstract paintings of 1950s New York and everything in-between. Travel forward in time and imagine what futuristic paintings and sculptures will look like. Photography and Book Arts [now filled, to join a wait list call 412-361-0455](ages 8 – 12) Spend half the time in the darkroom learning creative developing techniques and the rest of the day manipulating your images with photo transfer techniques, the addition of color and unique mounting methods. Included in the fee is a camera that can be taken home at the end of camp. Previous photo experience a plus but not necessary. Sketch Comedy and Improv(ages 9 – 14) Discover your inner comic genius! Learn the essentials of comedy and improvisation in this introductory acting camp. Write and perform skits, play theater games and more all while building self-confidence. Pop Art!(ages 9 – 14) Take a trip back to the 1960s and the age of Pop Art. Study the works of such artists as Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenberg and Pittsburgh’s own Andy Warhol. Learn what inspired them and then try it yourself. Projects may include painting, silk screening, giant soft sculptures and more. Animals of all kinds will inspire fun art projects with a variety of materials. Hear exciting animal stories and share some of our favorite animal experiences and stories too! 5–6 year olds may enroll in both Animals on Parade and Arts Explorers with supervision provided during the half hour break between camps. Arts Explorers(ages 5 – 7) Become an arts explorer! Search out the wonder, mystery and fun to be found in all of the arts. Draw, paint, dance, sculpt and sing everyday and let your creative energy grow! Adventures in Athens(ages 6 – 12) Take a trip back in time to ancient Athens. Learn about Greece’s rich culture and hear fantastic myths. View inspiring works of art, from clay vessels and colorful murals to impressive marble sculptures and architecture. Create your own artwork in the style of the Greeks by sculpting, painting, drawing and more. Hand Drawn Animation [now filled, to join a wait list call 412-361-0455](ages 14 - 17) Anyone who enjoys drawing will be able to bring their artwork to life in this fun class emphasizing traditional cartooning techniques. Classic examples from Disney to anime will be examined to reveal the magic of stop-motion. Begin by creating your own custom “flip-book” followed by a short animated video movie. Super-8 Filmmaking(ages 14- 17) Motion picture film is remarkably different than digital video. Here’s a chance to take a D.I.Y. (do it yourself) approach to this century-old medium. Explore the foundations of filmmaking with super-8 celluloid. Working collaboratively, participants will be able to shoot, hand-process, transfer and digitally edit black and white super-8 footage to achieve the exceptional look of film
August 11 - 15Art for TwoAC1110 Celebrate the arts during this unique adult-child art experience. Each day, dabble in various art media including clay, paint, markers, paper and fabric. Each child must be accompanied by one adult. Itsy Bitsy Spider [now filled, to join a wait list call 412-361-0455](ages 4 –6) Climb up the waterspout as we learn about our favorite eight legged friends. Use paint, paper, markers, clay and more to create artwork inspired by spiders and other creepy crawlers. Multi-Media Medley(ages 5 – 7) Discover your creativity while developing fundamental art skills. Explore painting, drawing, sculpture and more in this exciting multi-media week. A wonderful opportunity to sample a variety of arts! Painting with Van Gogh & Gauguin(ages 6 – 12) Explore the work of two of our favorite mater painters, Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin. Learn about their lives as friends and as painting rivals. Use their work as inspiration for your own colorful masterpieces. Found Art Paintings(ages 9 – 14) Take painting to the next level! Use the artwork of Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg as inspiration as you incorporate sculptural elements into your paintings. Use everyday objects that you find as part of your very own 3-D paintings. Participants will take on a creative roll to complete a short animated movie with a soundtrack. Go to the beach, climb mountains, journey to a rainforest, fly through outer space or visit an exciting land of make believe. Through stories, songs, painting, sculpture, drawing and printing, let your imagination soar to wonderful locations! Art Safari(ages 5 – 7) Take a safari through the wild world of art and animals. Each day, learn about new animals and let them inspire you to draw, paint and sculpt whimsical wild creatures using paint, paper, clay and more. Then, join Pittsburgh Zoo for one afternoon as they bring some animal friends to PCA for a first hand learning experience. It's a Jungle Out There!(ages 6 – 12) Spend the day discovering arts and animals from aardvarks to zebras! Create drawings, stories, sculpture and more as we find inspiration from the animals we see each day. Then, join the Pittsburgh Zoo for one afternoon as they bring some animal friends to PCA for a first hand learning experience. Anime and Cartooning [now filled, to join a wait list call 412-361-0455](ages 9 - 14) Learn the tricks of the trade in this introduction to anime and cartooning. Learn the fundamentals of line, contour, shading and perspective with a special focus on drawing the human figure in the style of popular cartoons and Japanese animation. Self-Portrait Painting(ages 9 - 14) Look in the mirror and explore the world of the self-portrait. Study in the tradition of the master painters by learning to paint the self-portrait. Study the work of Rembrandt, Frida Kahlo, da Vinci and more. Camp will culminate in a large-scale portrait in the style of Chuck Close. Special Effects: Green Screen(ages 14 - 17) Many film and television special effects sequences incorporate “green screen” technology to create movie magic. Explore an imaginative world of fantastic possibilities using this popular production technique. Working in crews, participants will direct, perform and edit an original production. Just don’t wear green to class!
