GROUP VISITS

Pittsburgh Center for the Arts presents the work of contemporary visual artists from the region. Our ten galleries change every eight to twelve weeks, with exhibitions of painting, sculpture, installation and media art. Ample parking is available to accommodate buses.

ABOUT GROUP WORKSHOPS

We offer a variety of fun, hands-on experiences in the studios. Participants work alongside PCA's professinal teaching artists to create unique contemporary artwork. In addition to workshops, groups have the option of taking a 30 minute tour of our galleries at no additional charge.

Workshops are priced according to the time frames listed below. If your group is looking for a longer studio experience, simply add $50 per hour to the listed price to calculate the cost.

WORKSHOPS FOR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Mosaics

3 hr workshop, 30 students max.
$250 for 1-10 students /$325 for 11-20 students /$400 for 21-30 students

Join our teaching artists to create personalized mosaic works of art. Starting with a wooden base, students will glue and grout their way to glass and tile mosaic masterpieces. Each student will create one decorative panel to take home.

Animation

2 hour workshop, 20 students max.
$200 for 1-10 students /$275 for 11-20 students

This hands-on workshop will provide students with a foundation in the popular art of animated filmmaking using readily available equipment. Projects may include both 2D and 3D animation.

Beaded Jewelry

2 hour workshop, 16 students max.
$200 for 1-10 students /$225 for 11-16 students

Students explore various techniques for creating beaded pieces of jewelry, including crimping, knotting, peyote stitch, multi-stranding and more! We'll create elegant, whimsical and funky creations using beads in an assortment of colors, textures and sizes.

Ceramics

2 hour workshop, 20 students max.
$250 for 1-10 students / $300 for 11-16 students

Students will learn a variety of handbuilding techniques for making pottery and sculpture from clay. Projects may include mugs, bowls, tiles and more!

Printmaking

2 hour workshop, 16 students max.
$200 for 1-10 students / $225 for 11-16 students

Students explore basic printmaking processes in this fun, hands-on workshop. Projects may include relief printing, monoprinting and screenprinting. Use our professional presses to create extraordinary 2D works of art.

WORKSHOPS FOR MIDDLE & HIGH SCHOOL

Wheelthrowing

2 hour workshop, 15 students max.
$225 for 1-10 students / $250 for 11-15 students

Work with our teaching artist to create pottery on the wheel. We’ll cover all the steps of throwing pottery, from wedging to centering to finishing pieces on the wheel. Projects may include cups, bowls and vases. Includes optional bisque-firing at no additional cost..

Glazing with Raku Firing

3 hour workshop, 15 students max.
$250 for 1-10 students / $300 for 11-15 students

Raku is a form of Japanese pottery characterized by low firing temperatures, special glazes and removal of pieces from the kiln while glowing red hot, achieving stunning results. The Mr. & Mrs. Ira H. Gordon Pavilion provides a pleasant outdoor environment for firings. Bring a few bisque-fired ceramic pieces.

Enameling

2 hour workshop, 15 students max.
$225 for 1-15 students

Students create their own copper pieces while learning the science and history of enameling. After a quick kiln firing, student pieces will be fashioned into ready-to-wear earrings, pendants, or charms. Students use opaque vitreous enamels and explore dry sifting, stenciling, and sgraffito techniques..

Wire Jewelry

2 hour workshop, 16 students max
$200 for 1-10 students / $225 for 11-16 students

Design, shape, wrap and hammer wire into pieces of jewelry! Students learn many techniques of wire-working and metal-forming using sterling silver and copper wire in a fun classroom setting. Projects in this limitless medium include rings, bracelets, earrings and more..

Beaded Jewelry

2 hour workshop, 16 students max.
$200 for 1-10 students / $225 for 11-16 students

Printmaking

90 minute workshop, 10 students max.
$200 for 1-10 students

Students work on monotypes or relief prints in this workshop. A monotype is a print created by transferring to paper an image from another surface, resulting in painterly textures and surface effects. Relief prints are created using a printing block that’s inked and pressed onto paper, resulting in a bold, graphic image. Both processes are great for young artists.

Dry Felting

90 minute workshop, 20 students max.
$175 for 1-10 students / $250 for 11-20 students

Dry felting, also known as needle felting, is a process used to create intricate 3D works using the most basic supplies – just felt, wool and needles. Students will explore color, texture and form as they create sculptural pieces of fiber art.
