Youth Media Program


Pittsburgh Filmmakers/Pittsburgh Center for the Arts (PF/PCA) has been a leader in media education and home to one of the oldest and most respected film, digital media and photography schools in the country for forty years. Through our Pittsburgh Filmmakers Youth Media Program, PF/PCA provides comprehensive media literacy education to young people and adults. The program is housed in The Annie Seamans Media Arts Lab, a state-of-the-art facility consisting of two lab/classrooms located in the Scaife School Building at Pittsburgh Center for the Arts.

The Pittsburgh Filmmakers Youth Media Program provides media literacy education to the region through innovative classes, hands-on workshops, and outreach programs to schools and other community partners. Classes, camps and workshops are offered in a wide range of media including digital video, filmmaking, photography, animation and interactive media.

Adventures in Green Screen
Ages 8-10
Jan 19-Feb 16, Saturdays 10:00am-12:00pm
Explore the fantastic work of green screen effects, a technique used in everything from the latest Hollywood blockbuster to the local weather forecast on TV. With a green screen, it’s simple to superimpose anything or anyone into any shot. You can even transport yourself to the moon. In this class you will collaborate on a storyboard, create sets and props, then shoot a green screen adventure.  Sign Up

Digital Animation with Wacom Tablets
Ages 11-14
Feb 4-Mar 4, Mondays 4:00-6:00pm
This class is an introduction to digital animation using a graphics tablet. Explore various animation methods including character animation and rotoscoping, the technique in which animators trace over live-action footage.  Sign Up

Manga to Anime
High School

Once an artistic tradition based in Japan, Manga (or Japanese comics) has become a popular art form worldwide. Learn about line, color, contour, and figure drawing, and create your own Manga-inspired Anime using a graphics tablet and animation software.  Sign Up

Editing with Final Cut
High School
Feb 16-Mar 16, Saturdays 1:00-3:00pm
For those with little or no editing experience. In this class students will learn the aesthetics of editing styles, as well as hands-on skills, such as using a nonlinear editing program and creating a DVD. Final Cut editing software will be covered in detail. Examples of various editing techniques ranging from Hollywood classics to experimental, independent, documentary films and videos will be screened and discussed.  Sign Up
