FILM

FACILITIES & EQUIPMENT:

Pittsburgh Filmmakers offers many options for the artist working with motion picture film. We have a wide variety of super-8 and 16mm cameras. Our super-8 fleet includes Canon, Minolta and Sankyo cameras with a variety of features such as macro lenses and intervalometers. For 16mm film makers, there are plenty of RX5 Bolex cameras, Eclair NPR cameras, and a fleet of Arriflex cameras consisting of Arri-S, Arri-BL, Arri-SR and an Arri-SRII modified for super 16. If you’re still cutting film for your editing, we have splicers and bench editing stations available, as well as Steenbeck 4-, 6- and 8-plate flatbeds. We have a MagnaSync recorder for transferring your sound to mag and an iso booth for recording voice-overs. If you’re editing digitally, our Final Cut Pro suites are outfitted with MacPro towers, external tape decks and speakers, and dual monitors as well as NTSC and/or HD reference monitors.

SOUNDSTAGE: Our Melwood Avenue facility contains a small soundstage with a lighting grid which may be reserved for up to a week at a time. The studio is wired with over forty 20-amp circuits. The room features a green-screen wall, a rack of paper seamless backdrops, a black curtain able to cover three walls and a loading dock for easy access.

AUDIO: Pittsburgh Filmmakers offers plenty of options for recording and mixing audio, with both analog and digital recorders, a wide range of microphones, and a ProTools mixing suite. We have everything from Nagra 4.2 reel-to-reel machines to Marantz PMD digital recorders, and a wide range of microphones, including Sennheiser and Audio Technica condensors, Sony and LectroSonic lavaliers (including wireless), and dynamic mics, along with all the accessories you need.

LIGHTING: Whether you work with film or video, or both, we have the lights and grip equipment you need, ranging from 200W Inkies to 2K fresnels-- lights and kits by Lowel, Sachtler, Mole-Richardson and more, as well as Sekonic digital and analog meters. PHOTOGRAPHY

FACILITIES & EQUIPMENT:

Pittsburgh Filmmaker's facilities include an entry level B&W; Darkroom outfitted with 18 Beseler Enlargers and 2 Advanced Darkrooms with a mix of Saunders diffusion enlargers and Omega condenser enlargers, with capabilities to print 35, 120, or 4x5 negatives. For color processing, we have a Hope Color processor with 7 individual color darkrooms with Omega enlargers. The Hope prints up to 32 inches wide. We also have Black Light Areas and various kinds of chemistry for non-silver printing. Filmmakers provides all the chemistry needed to print photos and process B&W; film: 35,120,220,127, and 4x5. In addition, we have matte cutters that can cut up to a 60 inch matte board.

Equipment available to be checked out includes a large selection of 35mm cameras and lenses, range of Medium Format cameras from Seagulls to Hassleblads, twin lens, single lens and 6x4.5; various 4x5 monorail cameras with various length lenses and 8x10 cameras.

Lighting equipment includes strobe lights ranging from White lightnings to Pro-fotos Selection, soft boxes and umbrellas, a large selection of on camera flashes, Smith Vics, and Tota lights. Also available are a selection of homemade and commercial pinhole cameras, Poloroid Day lab, and Nikon compatible lens baby and 35mm bellows.

Photography members also access to our Digital Photography cameras, labs, scanners, and printers.

VIDEO

FACILITIES & EQUIPMENT:

Filmmakers” may be a misnomer these days, as we offer a full range of digital video equipment, from 1-chip mini-DV cameras to HD cameras and editing systems. We offer cameras by Canon, Sony and Panasonic, including Canon XL-I and XL-II, Sony VX2100, Panasonic DVX100b and for HD, the Panasonic HVX200. CERAMICS

FACILITIES & EQUIPMENT:

With electric potter’s wheels, sculpture stands, a slab roller, a finishing station with over a dozen high fire glazes, electric kilns, a portable Raku kiln, the Mr. and Mrs. Ira H. Gordon Pavilion for Raku firings, and the region’s largest gas car kiln, our ceramic facilities are fully equipped for the independent artist.

The ceramics studio is located in the basement of the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts school (Scaife Building) and is a community studio with a wheel room, glaze area, and kiln room. The wheel room is equipped with 13 electric wheels, two kick/electric wheels, a slab roller, two clay extruders, a plaster wedging/reclaim table, a concrete wedging table, and two canvas covered work tables. The glaze area has a work table and extensive glaze samples of our 20 or so cone 10 glazes, and 8 raku glazes. All glazes are formulated and mixed in‐house.

In the kiln room has a recently new pug mill (for reclaiming clay) and three plaster drying tables. The ceramics program is equipped with 3 electric kilns, one approximately 60 cubic foot gas kiln, and a new portable Raku kiln. Firing schedules are posted at the beginning of each term. The studio keeps a stock of a large variety of clay, low‐fire terra cotta and red earthenware, cone 6 raku clay, and 6 or 7 different high fire stonewares and porcelains. Anything else can be special ordered as needed. All clay must be purchased from the PCA.

PRINTMAKING

FACILITIES & EQUIPMENT:

The printmaking studio, located at the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts school (Scaife Building), provides print artists with materials for intaglio and relief printing including Graphic Chemical inks in a range of colors and blacks along with tarlatans for wiping plates and ink modifiers. Acids for both zinc and copper etching are always available as are grounds, solvents, blotters and newsprint. Rosin is available but the studio does not currently have a rosin box. A range of tools including rulers, scrapers, burnishers, brayers and etching needles are provided. Monotype inks and base in waterborne form are stocked as well as a range of Plexiglas plates and some tools specific to monotype processes.

The studio is equipped with three presses. The large press has a thirty-nine inch wide bed and has been recently refurbished. This press is capable of handling a full 24 x 36 inch plate. The second press, a Sturges Eching Press, Model CP-5 has a 28 x 48 inch steel bedplate. This bed size allows about 34 inches of usable bed. There is a large hot plate available for applying grounds and a small dry-box. A small spray box is also available. Storage is very limited at this time and is generally unavailable.
