Everyone wants to direct, but what does a director do? Find out by exploring concepts such as visualization, composition and shot choice. Screening and analysis of a variety of films ranging from the silent era to contemporary classics will enable participants to recognize the influence of the director. You’ll learn how to plan and direct scenes, and discover how the crew works together to fulfill the director’s vision.

Explore an imaginative world of possibilities using this popular technology by creating your own superhero or fantasy character. Designed for High School students with a serious interest in filmmaking, this immersive camp offers hands-on experience working with the latest digital technology. Taught by instructors of Pittsburgh Filmmakers’ School of Film, Photography and Digital Media, it covers essential concepts and technical skills, while students have a blast collaborating to create short digital films. All participants receive a copy of the textbook, Shot By Shot: A Practical Guide to Filmmaking.

This acting workshop is designed for high school students with autism spectrum disorders. Students will act for the camera through a series of exercises created by PF/PCA’s Youth Media Program and Actors for Autism. They will explore the most valuable and fundamental aspects of acting: listening, responding and learning to behave truthfully under imaginary circumstances. As they become more uninhibited and begin to enliven their acting skills, they will feel more comfortable taking emotional risks, making bold choices – and have fun while doing it.

This super cool camp combines old-fashioned storytelling with cutting-edge technology. Work in collaboration with Carnegie Mellon University’s CREATE Lab, a community robotics and technology education program. With old family photos and new images created at camp, students will use digital cameras, scanners, microphones, and editing software to create unique digital “photo romans” - a film comprised entirely of still images set to voiceovers, music, and sound effects. In addition, students can add their voices to CREATE Lab’s Hear Me project by recording and editing an audio story. These stories recognize youth as crucial members of, and contributors to, the community and the world.

UFO’s, Big Foot and Ghosts are just a few of the subjects covered in this camp mixing strange phenomena with moviemaking. Historical and recent examples of famous hoaxes will be screened, analyzed and combined with video making exercises leading to an original “mockumentary” movie production.
