Replica of the Universe Methodology

Daniel Luchman

Pittsburgh Center for the Arts
February 7, 2014 to April 20, 2014

This conceptual installation revolves around mapping and the relationship between the physical and cultural reality of a particular city, neighborhood, or landscape. Luchman began by using Pittsburgh as his first site. He will travel next to Seoul, South Korea to conduct phase two of the project. The sculptural pieces evolve from a 3-day cycle of labor: reading, planning, engaging in reality, sensory absorption, note taking, and finally constructing and assembling data from the experience. He says he is searching for a narrative cosmography, by creating a situational enclosure that works as a microcosm for the larger universe. Luchman earned his MFA in sculpture from Carnegie Mellon University.
