This 8-week course will investigate three basic questions: “What is poetry?” “Why is it important?” and “How do we do it?” From here, students will embark on an inquiry of the essentials of reading and writing poetry - and what makes poetry essential to our lives. Students will learn fundamental poetry terms and principles including rhythm, meter, form, and line by studying historical as well as contemporary poems. As a class, we’ll take advantage of the summer weather to read and write outdoors when possible, develop a regular writing practice in journals, and discover poets whose voices and subjects serve as examples and inspiration. Students will emerge from the class with a body of work, an expanded reading consciousness, a writer’s journal, and an opportunity to participate in a public reading.
