2012 Emerging Artist of the Year

Emerging Artist of the Year Vanessa German, has created a style of performance she calls “spoken word opera,” combining her love of sound, language, and theater into multimedia, interactive performances that weave the power of traditional African storytelling, with performance poetry, comedy, hip hop, music and movement. As a sculptor, poet, actress and designer, she “believes in the seamlessness of creative process and purpose,” she says. Her work is inspired by African American/Black Folk Art,  African tribal power figures, the American story, and ritual ceremony. Her PCA exhibit will highlight her sculptural and installation based-work, as well as her spoken word performances.  Recently, German was selected to be included in the 2011 Pittsburgh Biennial at The Warhol Museum.

The Artist of the Year award, originating in 1949, is one of the oldest and most celebrated tradition at Pittsburgh Center for the Arts. This annual award recognizes those making significant creative contributions to Southwestern Pennsylvania and beyond. After a successful retrospective of all previous honorees in 2001, an Emerging Artist of the Year award was also implemented honoring the work of an artist at an earlier stage in his or her career. The awards provide support to develop new work leading to major solo exhibitions at the Center, confirming the dynamic role of artists in the region’s past, present and future.
