3RFF Closing Night: The Alloy Orchestra

Regent Square Theater

Saving the best for last, the Alloy Orchestra returns to close the Film Festival with the Pittsburgh premiere of From Morning to Midnight, a recently rediscovered, visually audacious German expressionist masterwork. It’s about a mild-mannered cashier who awakens to the power of the money he is surrounded by. It features sets and imagery even more radically stylized and avant-garde than The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1919). From Morning to Midnight is based on a controversial, stylistically experimental stage play of the era – one that divided audiences and critics. Seen today, the originality and daring of the film’s overall conception elevates it to the pantheon of the cinema’s most prominent and important “lost” works. With Alloy’s live score, this film just played an engagement at the New York Film Festival, where jaws dropped. (Karl Heinz Martin; Germany; 1920; 75 min.)
